How good is the average high-school guitarist?

I have been playing guitar for a few years and I like the level that I’m at now, but there are a lot of other guitarists at my school (9th grade) and I have never heard or seen any of them play, so I don’t know where I stand in comparison. I know you probably wouldn’t be able to answer this because you don’t know me or anyone at my school, but in general, how good is your average high-school guitarists? And at what point are you an exceptionally good high school guitarist?

It is all according to your level of dedication and amount of practice. I myself am in 11th grade and I have been playing for eh I’d say about a year and a half. I play in a local band and my band has a small contract with a local record company… kinda gives you a bit of an idea of my level of playing. I spend at least 3 hours a day going through keys and pentatonic scales and just playing random songs I’ve learned over the time I’ve played… then there is about oh say the 1 hour to 1 1/2 hours i practice with the rest of the band. I would say the average high-school guitarist should atleast be able to play bits of stuff from Avenged Sevenfold and Bullet For My Valentine… not sure if your into these bands but if not find something that equals their difficulty and try messing around with that and man for sure learn your blues pentatonic scales it seems boring and all but it helps in soloing and the such… hope that helps man!

  2. Well, I’m a freshman in college now. But in high school, one of my best buddies was AMAZING at guitar. Lol well, he still is obviously and just getting better. I mean he was really really good. Way above average for a high school kid. But the other people, were eh decent I guess. My friend was definiteyl better than anyone else in my school. But it depends on what you’re basing your judgement on. Will the average 9th grade guitarist compare to Jimi Hendrix? I HIGHLY doubt it. But average high school guitarists usually aren’t amazing. Keyword there is usually.

I graduated last year from a very musically involved high school.

  4. i know this is probably not what you want to hear, but it really depends. everyone is different in level and how they learn, so there’s really no way to measure how good someone is. also, its often a matter of opinion whether someone is good or not.
