If you don't want to spend that much the Fender Squire Standard Stratocaster is an awesome guitar, at least the one I played was. If you can spend $500 there are many good guitars in that price range, and some crappy ones, but for my money a Mexican Fender is the best deal going. For metal, buy a Jackson or a Dean. For Classic Rock, blues, and jazz, buy a les paul or a stratocaster. Telecasters are nice too. If you want a hollow /semi hollow body, check out the epiphone sheraton and the epiphone dot. Dont be afraid to spend more.
