What’s a good song that a singer and an acoustic guitarist could do?

I’m playing guitar, I have a female singer and we are going to perform something.

Preferably not romantic.

Doesn’t even have to be originally an acoustic song, something that would sound good with an acoustic guitarist and singer?

Ideas?

I do this all the time and you can use just about any piece that you can play and she can sing. I like that list that Silver Moon gave you.. there are some really good songs there… so here are a few more to you to look at.. and these are ones I’ve actually done the guitar/female solo with.

A NEW LIFE… Jekyll and Hyde

AS LONG AS HE NEEDS ME.. Oliver (watch the key change)

BEFORE THE NIGHT ENDS.. It’s a Leslie Mills number

COME AWAY WITH ME.. It’s a Norah Jones number

FOOLISH GAMES.. It’s a Jewel Number

I DREAMED A DREAM.. Les Miserables (very effective when done with a guitar)

Here is one that I just added a few weeks ago for a friend who was in a local talent contest.. It’s the SPANISH version of I FEEL PRETTY from West Side Story… "ME SIENTO HERMOSA"

I MISS THE MOUNTAINS.. Next to Normal and THIS WAS WRITTEN and PLAYED ON BROADWAY as a FEMALE SOLO WITH GUITAR ACCOMPANIMENT.

LOOK TO THE RAINBOW.. Finian’s Rainbow

MEMORY.. Cats

SEND IN THE CLOWNS.. A little night Music.. this can be very powerful when done with female solo and guitar

SOMEONE ELSE’S STORY.. Judy Kuhn (a really pretty ballad)

THE ROSE.. A Bette Midler song and a show stopper if you do it right

YOU RAISE ME UP.. it’s that Brenda Graham/Rolf Loveland song that Josh Groban made famous and was used for a commercial by the Humane society… I played this on guitar with my niece singing at a talent show last winter and she walked away with First Place.

WISHING YOU WERE HERE AGAIN.. Phantom of the Opera.. The success of this song is using a classical guitar and if the female singer has a bell like voice.. it can be another show stopper if it’s done right.

Good Luck. Usually I don’t go into this much detail in any reply, but I’ve been where you are going and I hope I have been able to give you some hints.

Good Luck

  1. Silver Moon Says:

    Mr.President – P!nk

Glitter in the Air – Pink (It’s piano, but the chords are really pretty with it, i prefer the guitar!)

Hallelujah – Paramore (testy on your vocals though, it’s advanced.)

    Beautiful Disaster – Kelly Clarkson

    Gunnin’ – Hedley

Good Riddance (Time of Your Life) – Green Day

    Go Figure – Everlife

    Traveling Soldier – Dixie Chicks

Five Minutes To Midnight – Boys Like Girls

    Invisible – Ashlee Simpson

When the World Comes Down – All American Rejects

    Falling Down – Avril Lavigne

Sorry.. I wasn’t sure what kind of music you were into… i’ve covered all these songs, and they worked out very well for me.

    Best of luck,
