Do you draw a line between heavy metal and death metal bands when it comes to preference?
I love rock and roll that kicks butt. And I love Heavy Metal. But there are some death metal groups who turn me away due to the way that they sing, which is a shame because their guitars and drums sound great.
Bands like Vader, Dying Fetus, and Lamb of God are the kind of groups that I am talking about where the singing sounds awful but the guitars and drums are great. Does anyone else feel this way, or am I just not use to it?
No I don’t. Interesting Question though.
I listen to bands be they Rock, Heavy Metal, Thrash, Death Metal or whatever, based on their talent and sound.
Do I draw a line when it comes to subject matter? Yes.
But I find be it Black, Death, Thrash, Heavy or even stuff like Black n Roll, it isn’t limited to any one genre. There are bands in heavy metal and other genres I find jsut as pathetic as I do Canniobal Corpse ( DM ) or Burzum ( BM).
The vocals.. well I dont care what type they are, be it screams, growls, grunts or the like, as long as they fit the music. For instance some Thrash bands have high pitched singers, and it just does nto fit the music at all. I lower, gravelly voice is best suited for the general sound of Thrash Metal. Some Death bands actually blend clean and harsh vocals also, as do some black metal ones. So really for me it is a matter of experimenting and seeing.
A great band that covers the WHOLE vocal range is Epica, where their primary singer is an Operatic Mezzo Soprano, but their backing singer does extremely good growls, grunts and black metal type screeches.
And tbh, they are usually something that grow on you. Don’t know too many people who heard em for the first time and thought.. wow that sounds awesome, lol.

Yeah, I know exactly what you mean, I used to feel the same way. Eventually I came to appreciate the death metal growls and screams, but I’ve always preferred some real singing. There are a few bands out there that blend the styles, one of my favorites is Raintime –>http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TfS46BjqYFc
They’re great musicians, but they have a horrible lead guitarist. I think if they could get their solos better, they would make it big. Anyways, I hope this helped. \m/

Yeh, I know what you mean.
When I was first becoming a heavy metal fan I did draw the line like that. When I started listening to them, I first appreciated their music for the drums and guitars and ignore the vocals. Eventually the vocals grew on me! Now I love bands such as: Lamb of God, Cannibal Corpse, Arch Enemy, Behemoth etc. and their vocals.

well what i would do if you have trouble understanding the lyrics is to look them up online while your listening to the song then it makes the song sounds alot better oh and lamb of god rules!!!
